Ned Poulter and Shane Jones, envisioned in pre-lockdown times, want to help smaller bars.

A guy who developed an app in his extra time that highlights independent clubs close to Wetherspoons places, states he has been impressed by the response.

The Android app Neverspoons has been downloaded almost 18,000 times in its very first week – more than Shane Jones expected from the first six months.

It is presently top of the complimentary app chart on Google Play.

The name is a pun on the bar chain Wetherspoons but Mr Jones stated he simply desired to provide smaller sized clubs an increase.

Mr Jones confessed that “a handful” of other chain club venues had already sneaked on to the app and he stated he prepared to “weed out” those people had actually complained to him about – including one from the Slug and Lettuce chain and a few Greene King and Firkin franchises.

” It’s difficult to manually vet countless bars,” he said.

Mr Jones has actually submitted details of 2,500 bars from around the UK up until now and a further 971 have been sent by drinkers and landlords.

One single contributor chosen 50 various bars in Birmingham, he stated.

Mr Jones, who is now working on the app with his buddy, Ned Poulter, is attempting to vet them all by looking them up online – he is unable to visit any personally as he has an underlying health condition that requires him to shield.

He said: “The entire premise is, Wetherspoons is an enormous chain and they don’t require as much assistance.”

Wetherspoon has 875 clubs and 58 hotels in the UK and Republic of Ireland and about 44,000 staff members.

Creator Tim Martin caused debate at the start of lockdown when he stated furloughed personnel may not be paid on time and recommended they took a job somewhere else

The company declined to comment on the app.

Neverspoons is free to download and is readily available just on Android phones at the minute.

It works by revealing the user where the nearby Wetherspoons is and then revealing the independent clubs around it.

Mr Jones stated he has made “a little bit of money” from carrying advertisements on it, and has gotten ₤200 in contributions from fans.

” It’s simply a little side-project – I’m a web developer, not an app designer.”
