After the incredible success of The Jungle Book in 2016, it was almost a matter of time before Disney decided to remake The Lion King as a live action film. And here we are.
Directed by The Jungle Book’s Jon Favreau, the film has huge steps to follow in, not only film quality, but the cast. The original cast is very memorable, with Matthew Broderick as Simba, Jeremy Irons as Scar, Nathan Lane as Timon and James Earl Jone as Mufasa. It will be hard to replace this cast. All in all, Disney has done an admirable job in this department.
We’ve known for a while that Donald Glover would voice Simba. We’ve also know that Disney had the smarts to recognize that James Earl Jones is irreplaceable and decided to bring him back in his iconic role. Other than these two, the cast remained unknown. That is, until Disney decided to officially announce the new cast.
As good of a job that Chiwetel Ejiofor will do as Scar, as he is an amazing actor, Jeremy Irons is almost as irreplaceable as James Earl Jones. The same can be said for Nathan Lane as Timon. Beyonce as Nala will be the big headline to come from this announcement. She will do a solid job because she can bring the soothing voice of Nala to life. Only time will tell if the cast can hold up to the original.
The Lion King will be released July 19, 2019.
