A potential thug who got away when his 77- year-old victim resisted has actually been jailed for three-and-a-half years.

Trevor Weston was using an atm at Sainsbury’s in Roath, Cardiff, on 5 February when he was informed to turn over cash in what district attorneys stated was a “cowardly” attack.

But rather of handing it over, CCTV shows Mr Weston installed his fists.

Michael Leonard Collins, 40, from Tremorfa, Cardiff, was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court on Thursday.

Collins, who had previously admitted tried break-in, had told Mr Weston “offer me your cash and card or I’ll stab you,” said Tim Evans, prosecuting.

However flat-capped Mr Weston set up his fists and said: “Do you desire a few of this friend?”

Mr Weston later made a victim effect statement, in which he stated: “I went home. I took a seat and consumed breakfast. I was seeing the TELEVISION and it suddenly struck me what might have occurred.

” I was very shaky. I believe I was stunned. Looking back at this time I am appreciative that absolutely nothing even worse occurred.”

Cops studied the CCTV and an officer identified Collins – but he rejected it when he was apprehended.

Cardiff Crown Court heard he has 57 previous convictions for 156 offences.

Sentencing Collins, Judge Richard Williams applauded Mr Weston for his “nerve” and “decision”.

” You selected somebody who you presumed wrongly to be vulnerable,” he told Collins.
