Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Avoidance, thinks “the most powerful weapon we have” against the novel coronavirus is using face coverings, cleaning hands and “being clever about social distancing.”.
” If all of us rigorously did this, we could really bring this break out back to where it requires to be,” Redfield told the Journal of the American Medical Association through video on Tuesday.
Coronavirus cases are surging across the U.S., from California to Texas to Florida. More than 3.4 million people in the nation have been diagnosed with the coronavirus and over 136,00 people have actually died.
To Redfield, a significant key to managing the pandemic is wearing masks.
” I truly do think if the American public all welcomed masking now and we really did it, you know, carefully … I think if we can get everybody to use a mask right now, I truly do study the next four to six, eight weeks, we can bring this epidemic under control,” Redfield said.
The CDC director stressed that wearing a mask is “not a political issue– it is a public health concern,” calling it a “personal duty” for everyone.
” I’m grateful to see the president wear a mask today, and the vice president,” Redfield stated. “We need them to set the example.”
President Donald Trump used a mask for the very first time in public over the weekend on a visit to Walter Reed Medical Center.
Looking ahead, Redfield stated he’s worried about the upcoming fall and winter, when influenza season starts.
” I do believe the fall and the winter season of 2020 and 2021 are going to be most likely among the most challenging times … in American public health due to the fact that of … the co-occurrence of COVID and influenza,” he informed JAMA.
Redfield stressed the importance of getting the flu vaccine, “since I believe those two respiratory pathogens hitting this at the very same time do have the prospective to stress our health system.”.
